![]() Select “Run only” and a “Personal / Non-Commercial use” licence to run the TeamViewer rather than installing it. A UAC (User Access Control) prompt may be seen as installing or running TeamViewer requires administrative permissions. You’ll also need to select the “Personal / Non-Commercial” licence before clicking “Accept – run”. If you’re going to use TeamViewer often, it’s recommended you install it properly. This option is useful if you’re in a rush or only need TeamViewer once. You can either perform a complete install or select “Run only” to run the application without installing it. A download for the TeamViewer app should then start automatically. You need to open the website and type in the device ID number on your phone’s display. In the app, above the ID, are instructions covering how to remotely connect to the device on the computer. Once the first time set up process is complete, your device will generate an ID number that is used to identify the device to be remotely controlled. If you’re prompted, install the AddOn to enable remote connections to your device. This varies by the device manufacturer and handset model, so this may not affect your phone. If you’re prompted, you will need to install the prompted AddOn to enable the remote access. The app will now launch the “remote control feature”. You can just swipe through them and click “Done” at the end to access the app properly. When you first open the app, you’ll see a few introductory screens. Install one of the remote access apps from the Play Store. On the device that you wish to connect to, install either the QuickSupport or Host app through the Play Store. This means it doesn’t require the app to be open or need a user to confirm a connection request. However, this app, is designed for unattended use. ![]() TeamViewer Host, available here, can also be used to allow remote connections to the device. TeamViewer QuickSupport, available here, can be used to allow remote connections to the device. It's clear enough that you need to add a new host, but you then are presented with fields asking for a Computer Name and Authentication. So I dutifully downloaded TightVNC on my PC, ran it, and then ran Desktop Connect on the iPad. For Windows PCs, it only tells you that you need to download a VNC server, saying that TightVNC had been tested and works with Desktop Connect. I haven't tried it on our iMac yet, but the documentation the app delivers is a lot more extensive for Apple computers than Windows systems. It uses RDP natively, but can also work with VNC servers. I had heard about Desktop Connect on a few other sites, and paid the $11.99 "introductory" price to download it to my iPad. ![]() My fellow ZDNet blogger Jason Perlow has discussed one RDP solution here, but since my primary computer runs Windows 7 Home Premium, I needed to go the VNC route. Some are able to use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), such as Professional versions of Windows 7, while others need to use Virtual Network Computing (VNC). There are a few apps that make it possible to connect to a Mac or a Windows- or Linux-based PC, falling into two camps.
